The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning about the explosive spread of the Zika virus in the Americas, with a high level of alarm. A meeting is scheduled to determine if the outbreak qualifies as a global health emergency. The virus could potentially affect three to four million people. Although a causal link between Zika and fetal malformations is not confirmed, suspicions remain strong. The virus, spread by the same mosquito as dengue and chikungunya, is already present in 21 countries in the Americas.
