Germany will open recent archives on Colonia Dignidad in Chile, a site of torture during Pinochet's dictatorship, founded by an ex-Nazi. The German Foreign Minister announced a reduction in the protection period, making archives from 1986 to 1996 available. Colonia Dignidad, established in 1961, was a place of indoctrination and forced labor, later used for political prisoner detention and torture. It has since been converted into a tourist and agricultural complex named Villa Baviera, now home to about 160 mostly elderly residents.
