Between 2007 and 2014, over 14,000 pregnant women in France took a medication suspected of causing fetal malformations. The French health authorities acknowledged this after a study on sodium valproate, an active compound in an antiepileptic drug also used for bipolar disorders. The Ministry of Health accepted responsibility and agreed to compensate victims. Meanwhile, the laboratory associated with the drug denied responsibility and adopted an aggressive stance against victims. The drug carries a 10% risk of malformations and higher risks of intellectual delay and autism, with 450 cases reported between 2006 and 2014.
