Competing against 200 cities, including New York and Tel Aviv, Medellín was recognized for its advancements in transportation, CO2 reduction, cultural spaces, and municipal services. The decision was made by a jury from City Group, The Wall Street Journal, and the Urban Land Institute. The public voting process, conducted online, saw Medellín receive 700,000 out of a million votes.
