During Roman times, castles were used to protect borders, known as forts. After the Carolingian Empire's fall, lords built castles as private residences. Stone castles offered better protection against weather than wooden homes. However, the advent of gunpowder and cannons made castles obsolete, as these weapons could destroy stone walls.
