Betelgeuse - Will It Become A Supernova?

Betelgeuse, a red supergiant and one of the top 10 brightest stars in the night sky, is nearing the end of its life. Located 640 light years from Earth, it is expected to explode into a supernova in about 100,000 years. Betelgeuse is massive, with a diameter 700 times that of the Sun, and if placed in our solar system, it would extend past Jupiter's orbit. Its surface temperature is cooler than the Sun's, at 6000 degrees Fahrenheit. As a red supergiant, Betelgeuse has exhausted its hydrogen fuel, leading to nuclear fusion in its outer shells. Eventually, its core will become iron, causing the star to collapse and explode as a supernova, potentially appearing as bright as the full moon from Earth.
