Infrared light, with a longer wavelength than visible light, is divided into near, mid, and far categories. Far infrared, also known as thermal infrared, is detectable as heat and is used in thermal imaging and weather observation. Near and mid infrared do not emit heat and are used in electronic devices like remote controls. Infrared light is emitted by all animals, the Earth, the sun, and distant celestial bodies. Some animals, such as rattlesnakes and vampire bats, use infrared sensing to locate food. Although invisible to humans, infrared provides valuable environmental and astronomical information.
