Mandla Maseko, a young South African, is among 23 winners of a competition for civilian space travel. Over a million people participated, and Maseko could become the first black African in space. The journey will reach 100 kilometers above Earth. Maseko underwent rigorous tests, including skydiving, and was one of three South Africans chosen for a final competition judged by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Aldrin sought courage, enthusiasm, and camaraderie in finalists. Maseko, who paused his engineering studies due to financial constraints, hopes to resume them before the 2015 space trip.
