Tornadoes are unpredictable and form quickly from thunderstorms when cool, dry air meets warm, humid air. They create a vortex that can become a tornado if conditions are right. Tornadoes often travel southwest to northeast and are most common in Tornado Alley between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Nighttime tornadoes are particularly dangerous. Tornadoes can occur anywhere, including Florida, where they are frequent but usually weak. Water spouts are similar to tornadoes but occur over water.
