In August 1492, Italian mariner Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain, aiming to find a new sea route to the Orient. Born in 1451, Columbus learned to sail at 14 and dreamed of reaching the Orient by sailing west. After six years, he secured funding from Spanish royalty. On October 12, 1492, he landed in the Caribbean, exploring islands like Cuba and Hispaniola. Columbus returned to Spain in 1493 with some treasures, leading to more voyages. Despite not finding a route to the Orient, his journeys opened the Americas to European exploration. Columbus died in 1506, leaving a lasting legacy.
