distributive property

• multiplying a sum by a number gives the same result as multiplying each addend by the number then adding the products together

• adding a sum by a number gives the same result as multiplying each addend by the number then adding the products together

• dividing a sum by a number gives the same result as multiplying each addend by the number then adding the products together

• subtracting a sum by a number gives the same result as multiplying each addend by the number then adding the products together

additive inverse

• two integers that are opposites. The sum of an integer and its additive inverse is zero.

• a number that, when added to another number, results in a positive integer.

• the product of two integers that results in a negative integer.

• the difference between two integers that results in a positive integer.

reciprocal

• A number that is added to another to equal one.

• A number that is subtracted from another to equal one.

• A number related to another in such a way that when the 2 numbers are multiplied they equal one.

• A number that is divided by another to equal one.

complex fractions

• a fraction a/b where a and b are both fractions and b does not equal zero

• a fraction where the numerator is an integer and the denominator is a fraction

• a fraction that has a whole number in the numerator and a fraction in the denominator

• a fraction that cannot be simplified further

multiplicative inverse

• two numbers with a product of one. The reciprocal of a given number or expression.

• the sum of two numbers that equals zero.

• a number that, when multiplied by itself, gives a product of one.

• the difference between two numbers that equals one.

absolute value

• the distance a number is from zero on the number line

• the value of a number without its sign

• the maximum value in a set of numbers

• the average of a set of numbers

integers

• any number from a number set {...-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3...}

• only positive whole numbers

• only negative whole numbers

• any number that is a fraction

associative property

• the way in which numbers are grouped does not change their sum or product.

• the order of numbers does not affect their sum or product.

• the sum of two numbers is always greater than either number.

• the product of two numbers is always less than either number.

rational numbers

• A number that can be written as a fraction, or as a terminating or repeating decimal.

• A number that cannot be expressed as a fraction.

• A whole number that is greater than zero.

• A number that has an infinite number of decimal places.

repeating decimal

• any decimal fraction that repeats a number or a group of numbers after the decimal without end.

• a decimal that terminates after a finite number of digits.

• a whole number expressed in decimal form.

• a decimal that has no repeating pattern.
