One defence against a potentially hazardous asteroid on course to hit earth is to blow it up using a nuclear weapon. This may sound like a plot from a film, but the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the USA (NASA) says it has come up with a genuine plan to do this. If an asteroid is at a considerable distance from the Earth, eight-ton rockets would be fired at it, hoping to hit it and force it off course. If the asteroid was too close to earth for that to work, the rockets would carry nuclear bombs instead to blow it into millions of pieces.
