During the Nazi Occupation of Europe, existentialism played a significant role in invigorating and uplifting the spirits of French citizens. Often dubbed ‘the philosophy of freedom’, existentialists rebelled against the Occupation intellectually and subtly in physical ways, e.g., giving Nazi soldiers incorrect directions.
