• See if anything in the chunk helps with your purpose

• See if anything can be used on the task the teacher gave

• See if anything can help answer your title question

How can a teacher give a purpose for reading?

• By telling you its for homework

• By assigning a specific task to go with it

• By telling you there will be a 100. questions test at the end

• By standing over your shoulder

What should you do if the teacher does not assign a task along with a reading?

• Read without a purpose for now

• Try your best to focus on everything

• Make a question out of the title of the reading

• Yell at them and demand they quite teaching

What should you do first if you can't summarize the chunk into Just one idea?

• Ask for help

• Move on for now

• Make something up

• Re-read the chunk

What do you do during the "Outline" step of Stop and JOT?

• Observe what's happening out the window

• Leave the text blank

• Highlighted text only

• Highlight + symbol/note

Why should each highlighted observation have a symbol next to it?

• It makes the article nicer to look at

• So you know why you highlighted it

• To show the teacher you know what you are doing.

• It helps you read faster

Once you stop yourself at the end of chunk, what do you do next?

• Take a break for 30 minutes

• Highlight as much as possible

• keep going. Don't waste time.
