Mixtures and Solutions

Homogeneous mixture

• A mixture that looks the same throughout because the substances are evenly mixed. Example: Salt in water.

• A mixture that contains visibly different substances or phases. Example: Salad.

• A mixture where one substance is dissolved in another, but they can be separated easily. Example: Oil and water.

• A mixture that has a uniform composition and properties throughout. Example: Air.

Solvent

• A substance that another substance dissolves in. Example: Water is a solvent.

• A type of chemical reaction that occurs in a solution.

• A solid that forms from a solution during a chemical reaction.

• A gas that can dissolve in liquids.

Heterogeneous mixtures

• A mixture where components are evenly distributed.

• A mixture where you can see the different parts because they are not evenly mixed. Examples: sand and water, soil.

• A mixture that has a uniform composition throughout.

• A mixture that can be separated by physical means.

Sediment

• Solid particles that have settled out of a suspension.

• Liquid particles that remain suspended in a fluid.

• Gaseous particles that have evaporated from a solution.

• Organic matter that has decomposed in soil.

Transparent

• A material that lets light pass through clearly, so you can see objects on the other side.

• A material that blocks all light, making it impossible to see through.

• A material that reflects light, creating a mirror-like surface.

• A material that scatters light, making objects appear blurry.

Solute

• A substance that dissolves in another substance.

• A substance that is dissolved by a solvent.

• A mixture of two or more substances.

• A chemical reaction between two substances.

Colloid

• A type of mixture with suspended particles that do not separate on their own.

• A homogeneous mixture where components are evenly distributed.

• A solid substance that dissolves in a liquid.

• A gas that is mixed with a liquid to form a solution.

Dissolve

• The process of mixing a solid with a liquid to form a solution. Example: Salt dissolves when mixed with water.

• The act of breaking a solid into smaller pieces without mixing it with a liquid.

• The process of heating a solid until it turns into gas without becoming liquid.

• The method of separating a solid from a liquid by filtration.

Solution

• A type of mixture made of one substance dissolved in another. Solutions are transparent because the dissolved particles are so tiny that they do not scatter light.

• A solid mixture that does not dissolve in any liquid.

• A type of gas that can be compressed easily.

• A combination of two or more substances that can be separated by physical means.

Residue

• The liquid that passes through a filter.

• The solid that gets trapped by a filter.

• The gas released during filtration.

• The filter paper used in the process.
