What caused the domestic conflict before the outbreak of the Civil War?

Before the Civil War, people in the United States disagreed about slavery. The North wanted to stop slavery, but the South wanted to keep it. This caused many arguments. People also fought about power—who should make decisions about slavery, the states or the national government. These disagreements led to war.

How did the federal government attempt to resolve the conflicts before the Civil War?

The federal government tried to keep peace by making compromises. They created laws to balance power between free and slave states. such as the Missouri Compromise.

By allowing each state to decide every law, including slavery, without interference from the federal government.

By banning slavery in all states immediately, forcing the South to give up slavery.

By creating new political parties to help both the North and South agree on slavery.

How did domestic expansion contribute to domestic conflicts before the Civil War?

As the United States expanded west, new territories had to decide whether to allow slavery. This caused conflict between the North and South which led to increase tension and violence.

Expansion gave equal land to the North and South, preventing arguments over slavery thus gave equality for all states.

As new land was added, slavery automatically spread across all territories without debate. This led to economic prosperity and more tax revenue for the federal government.

The government forced all new states to be free states, angering the South which in turn increased tension and violence between the two sides.

How did African Americans contribute to the Civil War?

African Americans were soldiers, workers, guides, and even escaped slaves hurt the southern economy.

African Americans refused to participate in the war and stayed neutral.

African Americans fought only for the Confederacy.

African Americans helped build weapons for the South.

What sacrifices did women make during the Civil War?

They worked as nurses, took over jobs, served as spies, disguised themselves as soldiers.

They stayed at home and refused to help in any way because they believed the war did not affect them.

They were only allowed to cook and clean for soldiers but did not take on any other important roles.

They traveled to Europe to escape the war and wait for it to end.

Why did some American Indian tribes oppose the Civil War?

They distrusted the U.S. government, hoped for better treatment from the Confederacy, were forced to choose sides, and wanted to protect their people.

They wanted to take over the U.S. and replace both the Union and the Confederacy.

They strongly supported slavery and wanted to expand it into their own lands.

They had no interest in the war because it did not affect them at all.

How did the Civil War impact the American economy, society and politics?

It helped Northern industry grow, weakened the Southern economy, ended slavery, caused great loss of life, strengthened the federal government, and led to Reconstruction.

It had no real effect on the country, and everything went back to normal immediately after the war.

It caused the South to become wealthier than the North because they won the war.

It led to the U.S. splitting into two separate countries permanently, however they would reunite later in history.
