Transmission System Function

The function of the transmission system is to:

• Turn the engine power into vehicle motion

• Assist in changing gear

• Obtain low/high range

• Provide a PTO

A baulk-ring synchromesh unit prevents gear engagement:

• Due to the strength of its hub springs

• Because baulk ring-teeth are out of line with outer sleeve

• Because gear dog-teeth are out of line with hub

• By holding the main shaft stationary

When a 4-speed Gear-box has TOP gear engaged, drive to the Prop-shaft is transmitted through the:

• Lay-shaft & Main-shaft

• Primary shaft & Idler shaft

• Primary shaft & Lay-shaft

• Primary shaft & Main-shaft

ONE advantage of a 'baulk-ring' synchromesh unit is that there is a reduction in damage to the:

• Dog teeth

• Vehicle clutch

• Helical gearing

• Spur gears

The usual method of lubricating gear-box gears is:

• 'Splash', using oil

• 'Splash', using grease

• By Oil-can

• Smearing with grease

The purpose of the 'Locking Device' incorporated in the gear-change mechanism of a vehicle's gear-box, is to:

• Prevent two gears from being engaged simultaneously

• Hold the selected gear in the ‘engaged’ position

• Prevent an accidental engagement of reverse gear

• Locate the selector rods in the gear-box
