Pupil

• Hole created by the iris; allows light through to the lens.

• Colored part of the eye that controls the size of the pupil.

• Transparent front part of the eye that helps focus light.

• Layer of tissue at the back of the eye that contains light-sensitive cells.

Cochlea

• Contains the "Organ of Corti" where the vibrations created by the middle ear in the fluid get converted by hair cells into nerve impulses.

• Is responsible for the production of sound waves in the ear.

• Acts as a barrier to protect the inner ear from external noise.

• Regulates the balance of fluids in the inner ear.

Middle Ear Infection (Otitis Media)

• Accumulation of fluid in the middle ear caused by local and systemic infection and inflammation.

• A condition characterized by the presence of excessive earwax.

• A viral infection that affects the outer ear canal.

• A type of hearing loss due to age-related changes in the ear.

Auditory (Eustachian) Tube

• A small tube extending from the tympanic cavity to the pharynx, helping to equalize pressure between both sides of the ear drum.

• A structure that connects the outer ear to the inner ear, facilitating sound transmission.

• A canal that allows for the drainage of fluid from the inner ear to the throat.

• A muscle that controls the movement of the ear drum.

Conjunctivitis

• Inflammation of the conjunctiva (pink eye).

• A viral infection causing a sore throat.

• A bacterial infection of the skin.

• An allergic reaction causing hives.

Aqueous Humor

• Watery fluid behind the cornea and in front of iris; helps keep the shape of the cornea.

• Thick gel-like substance that fills the space between the lens and the retina.

• Fluid that nourishes the retina and helps maintain its position.

• Clear liquid that protects the eye from infections.

Cataracts

• Clouding of the lens.

• Increased pressure in the eye.

• Separation of the retina from the back of the eye.

• Infection of the eye's outer layer.

Inner Ear

• Translates (transduces) sound waves to nerve impulses; also uses movement of fluid in the vestibule and semicircular canals to provide feedback on our position in space (balance).

• Filters and amplifies sound waves before they reach the cochlea.

• Regulates the pressure in the middle ear to maintain balance.

• Converts light signals into electrical impulses for vision.

Glaucoma

• Increased intraocular pressure.

• Decreased intraocular pressure.

• Normal intraocular pressure.

• Intraocular pressure fluctuates.

Cornea

• Window to the Eye; where the sclera becomes clear to allow light through.

• Part of the eye that contains the iris and pupil.

• Layer of the eye responsible for color perception.

• Outer layer of the eye that protects it from injury.
