A people’s way of life often depends on the resources they have. How did the early First Nations people use their resources to live? Compare the lives of those who lived in the woodlands, on the Pacific coast, and in the far north. Use standard grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation.

When the first people from Asia came to Canada, they traveled southward. At that time, Canada was covered in ice, and living there would have been hard. When Canada warmed and the ice melted, people began migrating north and settled in various areas of the land. Some lived in the eastern woodlands, some went to the Pacific coast, and others settled farther north. Their way of life depended on the resources of the area they chose as their homes. The people who settled in the eastern woodlands lived by hunting, fishing, and farming. They lived in the villages they made, and they traded with one another. Those who settled along the Pacific coast had even more resources. The ocean and the rivers provided water and fish. The people hunted game in the forests and used the wood to make their houses and their canoes. The canoes provided them a means to hunt and to fish. Those who settled farther north had a more difficult life. Few plants or trees grew in the northern lands, and the people had to find other sources of food and to build their houses from materials other than wood. They also had to endure cold temperatures. They hunted caribou on land and seals and whales on water. They used caribou hides to make their clothing and shoes.
