A gene is special stretch of DNA (a sequence of A's, C's, T's, G's) that code for proteins (made up of amino acids).
These proteins are responisible for determining traits like eye color, skin color, and freckles. If there is a mistake in the sequence of A's, C's, T's, and G's, then this may affect the structure and function of the protein or the wellbeing of the organism.
