Science: How Minerals are Formed
Scientists have identified more than 3,000 known minerals. Only nine of these are very common and make up 95% of the Earth’s crust. Minerals called silicates are the building blocks of rocks. So, how are minerals made? They can be formed in a number of ways. Minerals can be made from crystallization from melt. This means that crystals form after rocks are in a melted state, like lava which forms underground for volcanoes. Minerals can be formed when water evaporates, leaving some minerals behind, like salt or calcite. Minerals may be made from hot water which flows through cracks in rocks and forms crystals. They may also be made from high temperature and pressure (like diamonds from coal or other types of metamorphic rock).
