Knife Safety

Between cuts with your knife, you immediately need to:

• Set it down facing blade away from you
• Put the cap back on
• Hand it to your partner so they can use it
• Put it back

When using the knife, NEVER

• touch the blade
• put the cap on
• set it down between cuts

When carrying your knife, the cap needs to be on and it should be carried

• blade side down and towards others
• blade side up and towards others
• blade side up and away from others
• blade side down and away from others

When handing someone a knife, it should be

• blade first with the cap on
• handle first with the cap on
• blade first with the cap off
• handle first with the cap off

When is a craft knife considered a weapon?

• If it is taken out of class
• If it is used inappropriately
• When played with as a toy or prop
• All of the above

It is okay to use a dull or damaged blade

• if my partner does it
• if it is the only knife available

When I cut, I must use

• a self-healing cutting mat

Inspect your blade before each use, tell the teacher if

• it is damaged

How much pressure do I need to use for my knife?

• A lot, it's hard to cut through paper
• Light, it should feel like drawing

When using a craft knife you should keep one hand on your paper for tension, but also

• keep your fingers out of the line of the blade and turn your paper to always cut toward you
