Town Hall Quizz October

This monument was built between 1921 and 1922 symbolically linking the city to the old Rome - the civilization that imposed the monument as a symbol of victory. It means more than the victory in the First World War, it is considered as the sign of the unity of the people.
The story of this monument begins in 1922, four years after the Great Union when the authorities of that time decided to organize a grand parade to celebrate the event.

It began in 1537 as a mud fort. It was built by a vassal of the city founder. In 1761 the mud fort was replaced with a stone fort and it was further improved by Tipu Sultan in the late 18th century. It was damaged during an Anglo-Mysore war in 1791. It still remains a good example of 18th-century military fortification. The fort has provided the setting for the treasure hunt in the book Riddle of the Seventh Stone.

This majestic complex comprises six buildings and nearly fifty galleries; the impressive works cross every era and branch of science and art, from zoology and anthropology to puppetry, painting and fibre optic sculpture. Started in 1851, it is the second oldest museum in India after the Indian Museum in Kolkata. Rich in archaeological and numismatic collections, the museum has the largest collection of Roman antiquities, outside Europe.

This museum is one of the most famous around the world, including a mysterious smile, painted by Leonardo da Vinci. The name derives from an association with a wolf hunting den (via Latin: lupus, lower Empire: lupara).

The edifice has come to represent the cultural and architectural legacy of the city where it is built. It is constructed in Neo-Dravidian style and completed in 1956 by more than 5,000 workers. It includes accommodating government offices, archives, a library and a banquet hall in the same building with artistic elements added representing the tradition of the state.

Built to resemble Windsor Castle, in the Tudor Revival style of architecture, it is a two-level palace with Roman arches marking the entrance. Impressive furniture featuring Victorian, neo-classical, and Edwardian elements adorn the palace interiors. Elegant wood carvings, cornices, floral motifs, and relief paintings done on the ceiling further add to the beauty of the interiors. This regal edifice also boasts of stained glass and mirrors imported from England as well as wooden fans that lend the palace an old-world charm.  Its grounds are a popular venue for rock concerts and other music events.

This building is one of the four national opera and ballet companies of the respective country. The company is headquartered in the capital, near the presidential neighborhood. In 1921, the company was formally established as an independent institution, with subsequent funding that oscillated between direct government funding and funding from private individuals. The first production by the newly formalized company was of Wagner's Lohengrin conducted by a famous composer, the author of Oedipe. The building of this Opera is listed in the National Register of Historic Monuments and its new artistic director is Eitan Schmeisser.

The present structure of this building dates back to 1523 AD, when it was built by the Portuguese over the tomb of Thomas the Apostle. In 1896, it was renovated according to neo-Gothic designs, as was favored by British architects in the late 19th century. It has a rib vault ceiling made of teak wood, with marble and granite used in other parts of the construction. It was built with 16 windows and 34 stained glass panels, with a main stained glass over the altar representing Thomas the Apostle touching the wound of Christ. The statue in the main altar represents "Thomas the Apostle as priest and Jesus Christ as king". In addition, there are 14 Stations of the Cross attached at the side wall of the cathedral.

It is a monument in Chennai dedicated to a classical Tamil poet philosopher. It is the city's biggest Tamil cultural centre. It is located at the intersection of the Kodambakkam High road and the Village road in Nungambakkam neighborhood of Chennai. The monument now stands at what was once the deepest point of a local lake called the Nungambakkam lake. The monument consists of a decorative arch, an auditorium that can accommodate around 3,500 people. The chariot is made of around 3000 blocks of granite stone from Tiruvannamalai.
