Charter Colony

• set up when a group of people (normally a company) was given the right to a certain piece of land in a contract. They normally had a lot of independence and could make their own rules.

Royal Colony

• A colony governed by local landowners.

• set up by England where the King set up a Royal Governor.

Proprietary Colony

• A colony governed by a foreign government.
• A colony that is self-governed by its inhabitants.
• A colony that is owned by a corporation.
• given to a person or family, who could make laws and appoint officials as he or they pleased.
