Negative sentences in Afrikaans get the word (a)   twice.

Iemand (somebody) changes to (a)  

êrens (somewhere) changes to (a)  

iets (something) changes to (a)  

ooit (ever) changes to (a)  

When you answer a question negatively, you start with (a)  

Example:

Is daar iemand by die deur?

iemand - niemand

êrens - nêrens

iets - niks

ooit - nooit

Is daar iets in die kas?

iemand - niemand

iets - niks
