 What was the Cold War?

• The ‘Big Three’, Roosevelt (USA), Churchill (Britain) and Stalin (USSR),

• A period of enormous tension between the 2 superpowers (USA and USSR)  and their allies, 1945-1991.

2. What were their different  ideologies? (Ideas about  

how to run a country.)

• The USA was capitalist and democratic.The USSR (or Soviet Union) was communist.

• The people had few  freedoms.

Capitalist and democratic believed in:

•  Free  elections.People could own their own companies  (capitalist). 

• There were no free  elections-only one political party was allowed.

Communist believes that:

• There were no free  elections-only one political party was allowed. The country owned all industry.

• The USSR (or Soviet Union) was communist.

• the USSR thought the USA wanted to destroy  communism. The USA thought the USSR wanted to destroy capitalism.

The name was given to the USA, USSR and Great Britain who were the allies  fighting Nazi Germany, Japan and Italy in World War Two.

What did they agree at the  Yalta Conference (1945?

•  A United Nations organization would be set up after the war.

• To divide Germany into 4 zones.

  ∙ Berlin was also divided into 4 zones.

   ∙ The USSR agreed to allow free elections in Poland
