What should you do when the question says:

"What question can be answered in paragraph 2?"

• Reread paragraph 2 and then read all the answers to see which one matches what you just read about.

• Take a nap at your desk.

What do you do when you see something like this?

• Find what happened as a result of the event (cause and effect)

• Eat a bag of chips loudly during the test.

What does it mean when the question asks:

"The author most likely wrote this because.."

• You choose the author's purpose for the text (inform, persuade, explain..)

• Decide you need to go sharpen your pencil during the middle of the SOL

What do you do when you see a web like this with a blank part?

• Either find a matching detail that matches the middle topic or find a topic that matches all of the detail bubbles.

• Think about what you're going to eat for lunch.

What do you do when you see this type of question?

"What is the meaning of the word sturdy in paragraph 4?"

• Go back to paragraph 4, highlight the sentence with the word sturdy in it, and think about what it means. Choose the correct definition among the answers.

• Ask to go to the bathroom, again.

How do you answer this type of question?

• Find all of the words with both the prefix un- and a root/base word.

  Make sure to check that you got them all!

• Knock down your testing divider on purpose and then run out of the classroom.

What does it mean when you see a question with "What will ____ most likely do next?"

• You need to use your background knowledge and clues from the text to make an inference. Choose the BEST answer that makes the most sense.

• Remember that one time you took a rock from the Olive Garden parking lot.

  (do not recommend, that is stealing.)

What does it mean when a question says "Which detail from the story shows that the character was rude?"

• Choose the answer that directly proves that the character is rude even though some of the other answers may still be true from the story.

• Jump up and down and then accidentally slam your head against the desk loudly.

What should you do when you see a question asking about the best summary?

• Choose the answer that has ALL of the important parts of the story (characters, conflict, resolution) - not little details. Slash some trash to help you figure it out.

• Accidentally drop your metal water bottle on the ground.

• A flow chart: It shows sequence or steps in a story or how-to. Find the missing event or step in order. REREAD - GO BACK AND TRIPLE CHECK!!
