When there are no visuals in the text, what's the most important thing to do?

What can you do if you are having trouble keeping track of "proper nouns" (such as characters, locations, etc.) in a story?

• Create a chart listing details about each person or place.

• Create flashcards and review them until they are locked in your memory.

• Don't worry about proper nouns, it's the general context/plot of the reading that is most important.

• Use memory techniques to help you remember proper nouns.

Literature is fiction, but is written with unfamiliar language. How can you "build connections" to help you understand literature better?

• Find a dictionary from the time period that the text was written

• Partner with friend and read the book together

• Looking up text/video summaries to become familiar with the plot and language

• Listen to it as an audiobook.

When you come to a word you don't know, you should:

• Use context clues, take the word apart, or look it up.

• Skip it and keep reading. You can always go back later and figure it out.

• Ask a teacher or parent what the word means.

• Substitute the word with a word you do know.
