A Break is Any uninterrupted period of at least ​ (a)   minutes during which the driver may freely dispose of his time.​ ​

“Week” or “Fixed Week”: A period of seven days, being the period between ​ (a)  

• 00:00 on Monday and 24:00 on Sunday.

“Rest”: Any uninterrupted period of at least ​​ (a)   during which the driver may freely dispose of his time.

After ​ (a)   driving, the driver has to have a break of at least ​ (b)   .  This break can be taken as one block or divided into two smaller periods of ​ (c)   followed by ​ (d)   .

A driver ‘wipes the slate clean’ if he/she takes breaks totalling __ minutes during or at the end of a 4 ½ hour driving period, regardless of the amount of driving done to that point.  This means that the counter then starts again with a new 4 ½ hour driving period

In each ​ (a)   period a driver must have a daily rest period of ​ (b)   consecutive hours.  This rest may be reduced to ​ (c)   consecutive hours ​ (d)   times in between ​ (e)   weekly rest periods.

In addition to your 3 days of 9 hour overnight rest, you can also split daily rest to reduce your overnight rest to 9 hours three times in between two weekly rest periods.  The split daily rest rule means that if you reduce your overnight rest to ​ (a)   hours you must have had a ​ (b)   consecutive hour rest during the day.    ​ ​

After a maximum of ​​ (a)   daily driving periods (24hr periods) a driver must have a weekly rest period of ​ (b)   hours.  This rest can on occasions be reduced to a minimum of ​ (c)   hours but compensation rules apply.  This can be a complicated ruling that is calculated and applied to each Trip by Transport.  When a reduced weekly rest is taken then this reduction must be compensated by adding it to a daily or weekly rest period by the end of the third week following the week in question.

If while you are on a ferry and you are not going to get your minimum ​ (a)   hours rest, you can interrupt your rest twice as long as the total time does not exceed ​ (b)   hour.  You must then increase your rest from 9 hours to ​ (c)   hours in this situation, e.g. 7 hrs on ferry - move coach - 1.5 hrs on ferry - drive to hotel - complete rest of 2.5 hr
