F3: U6: Second Conditional, wish, if only

You use the Second Conditional to:

• predict the future result of an action

• talk about the present or future result of an imaginary situation

• talk about the imaginary past result of an imaginary past event

• talk about things that are generally true, especially laws, rules

You create the Second Conditional with the use of:

• if + Past Simple,

  would/wouldn’t + verb

• if + Past Perfect, would/wouldn’t have + Past Participle

• if + Present Simple, will/won't + verb

• if + Present Simple, Present Simple

If I had a pair of winter boots, my feet wouldn’t be cold.

• The speaker’s feet are cold.

• The speaker’s feet aren’t cold.

If you ___ a superpower, what would it be?

1. I _______ (take) a cold shower if I ________ (have) sunburn.

You can use wish/if only + Past Simple to say that:

• you really want a present situation to be different

• you want somebody’s present behaviour to change

1. My daughter never calls me. =

Fast-food is bad for you.  =
If only ________________ bad for you.

• fast food wasn't

• fast-food wouldn't

• fast-food won't

• fast-food isn't
