The first U.S. census was in 1790. A census is taken every ten years. What is a census? It is a count of the people in our country.
How is it done? Every house gets a paper in the mail. Someone in each house fills out the paper. They answer questions. Some questions are about language. Other questions are about jobs. The paper asks how many live in the house. It asks for names. It asks for ages. When the paper is finished, it is mailed. The U.S. government gets it. They study the information. Then they tell us how many people live in each city.
