Przeczytaj tekst. Które z podanych odpowiedzi A–D są właściwe i zgodne z treścią tekstu?
Supermarkets, like any other business, use adverts to attract customers. But, once shoppers are in the store, what can the shops do to make them spend more money?
The most obvious answer is by offering discounts. As well as generally competitive prices, shops often have special offers on selected products. As well as these, there are the ‘buy two, get one free’ bargains, which often persuade customers to buy products they didn’t really want. The food may be wasted if people don’t eat the second item before its sell by date. Similar but not such a good offer is ‘buy one and get the second one at a lower price’, but not free. You might see a big sign saying: ‘Shampoo. Buy Two only £2.49’ and then, in much smaller writing ‘price per bottle when you buy two bottles. One bottle £3.50’. Some people may not notice and will take one bottle thinking it costs the lower price. Others might even think that they will get two bottles for £2.49. Another kind of bargain is when a product has been on sale for a certain price, for example £5. Its price then goes up to £6 and then, a few days later there’s a new sign saying ‘Was £6 now only £5.50’. So, the ‘bargain’ costs more than it did a few days earlier. You have to be really careful not to be caught out by confusing offers, which aren’t always as generous as people think.
As well as using price reductions, supermarkets use the layout of the store to increase sales. They know that the most commonly bought items include things such as bread, butter and pasta or rice. They often place these items in different aisles so that, with luck, customers will spot an interesting looking bargain as they pass by. Occasionally, everything is moved round so that customers have to search for their favourite items once again rather than heading straight for them.
There are other clever ways to make customers buy more. We tend to notice products which are at eye level more than those above or below. Often supermarkets will place products attractive for children at the level of a child’s eyes. This may be unhealthy food which adults would usually ignore but, if the child sees it, they might just be able to persuade their parent to buy it for them.
Finally, when the customers have finished their shopping and reach the checkout, they spend their time in the queue, staring at shelves of chocolate bars and other tasty snacks, which they may not have noticed in the sweets’ aisle. Bored children can be calmed by the promise of a little treat when they get home if they are well-behaved while waiting but even adults shopping alone may well add something to the shopping trolley so that they can reward themselves for their efforts as they walk from the store to their cars.
