Eclectic Backward Lesson Planning

We're going to answer a quiz on more recent approaches in ELT. The context is a lesson with the following aim:

"By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to speak about their life experiences."

Learners are provided with the lexis and grammar needed to talk about their life experiences. They have ample opportunity to use the language in both controlled and free practice.

The teacher models the target language for speaking about experiences using a picture. Learners repeat the teacher's sentences and are then encouraged to create sentences of their own. The teacher monitors closely for errors.

Learners are asked what experiences they would like to talk about. The teacher monitors and provides help with vocabulary and grammar only when necessary. There is no use of materials and teaching is done only from emerging language of students.

Learners start discussing their experiences. The teacher notices errors in the use of present perfect and uses a combination of controlled grammar exercises and games to teach the target language. Learners learn multiword phrases and then create a class quiz to learn about other students' life experiences.

Learners learn multiword phrases such as:

"made a bad decision" , "given bad advice"

They then have to complete the sentence frame with the multiword phrases;

"Never have I ever..."

Pronunciation of multiword phrases are practiced.

Learners listen to a presentation on the annual sales report of a tour company. They take notes and analyse the report for language use. Then they prepare a sales report in groups. This is good practice for when they go back to work.

Learners are shown a series of pictures depicting different life experiences. They are then asked to create interview questions in groups to ask about the experiences shown in the pictures. The teacher provides feedback on grammar and vocabulary usage.
