MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

On July 8th, 1853, this Commodore (now Rear Admiral Lower Half) reached the shores of Tokyo Bay with 4 ships, forever ending the Tokugawa Shogunate's isolationist policy, Sakoku. The resulting treaty forced trade to be opened with the United States and Japan. Who was this Commodore?

Commodore Matthew Perry

Admiral Chester Nimitz

John Paul Jones

Commodore John Barry

Answer explanation

Commodore Matthew Perry arrived in Japan with the ships, and Japanese painters later depicted the ships as dark and evil warships. The Tokugawa Shogun had no choice but to accept the US's proposition to open trade, as the isolation had made them extremely technologically inferior to the rest of the world. However, many of the samurai were extremely discontent with the Shogun's decision, and rose up in rebellion to reinstate the Emperor to the throne. With foreign trade opened, there was no way to win the war traditionally with only spears, katanas, bows, and old matchlocks. Both Imperial and Shogunate clans began arming themselves with these foreign-supplied weapons, such as gatling guns, rifles, armstrong guns, and much more. In the end, the Shogunate forces were overwhelmed by the Imperial forces, and ironically modernized Japan the most.
