Atoms

• Matter is never made or lost, it just changes
• NOT chemically combined
• Smallest particle of an element
• substances that START a chemical reaction

Molecules

• Smallest particle of an element
• Substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances (Example: Au, Li, S)
• Chemicals do NOT form a new substance- change in state of matter
• The smallest part of a compound, atoms combine by covalent bonds

Element

• 2 or more substances mixed together
• Two couples arrive at the prom. Both couples break up, switch partners and form two new couples.
• Substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances (Example: Au, Li, S)
• used to separate one reactant or product from another

Compound

• Two single students go to prom and form a couple.
• Zn + H₂SO₄ → ZnSO₄ + H₂
• AB+C-->A+BC
• 2 or more different elements chemically combined

Mixture

• 2 or more substances mixed together; not chemically combined
• AB+C-->A+BC
• The direction of the reaction
• Chemicals do NOT form a new substance- change in state of matter

Reactants

• substances that START a chemical reaction

• AB-->A+B
• Chemicals do NOT form a new substance- change in state of matter

Products

• A couple goes to prom and break up.
• Substances PRODUCED in a reaction
• substances that START a chemical reaction

Physical Change

• Fuel (hydrocarbon) + oxygen always produce Carbon dioxide and water
• NOT chemically combined
• Chemicals do NOT form a new substance- change in state of matter

• Forms a NEW substance (Cannot undo that change)
• 2 or more different elements chemically combined
