Placement of Phrases- dangling or misplaced

When a phrase is closer to another noun than the one it actually describes.....

example- Tom swatted the mosquito muttering quietly.

(Is the mosquito "muttering quitely"?) No. Tom is muttering quitely, therefore, this phrase needs to be moved closer to "Tom," which it describes.

When there is no noun a phrase can logically describe.....

Opening the front door, snow was falling at a great rate.

(Can snow open a door? No. What noun in this sentence can open a door? There is no noun here that logically "opens a door," therefore you must add one.)
