A Surprise Party for Dad

Tyler and Kim were planning a surprise birthday party for their dad. Their mom helped them choose a date. Then they worked together to make a guest list and send out invitations.

The two children bought balloons and party decorations. They hid the items in their bedroom closet. They hid Dad's presents there, too. Tyler had bought Dad a book about interesting cars. Kim had bought a pair of slippers. The children knew that Dad would never snoop around in their closets.

On the day of the party, Mom asked Dad to go to the furniture store with her. Dad's face got a strange look, but he agreed. When they returned home, DAd was holding a store catalog in his hand. As soon as Dad opened the door, a group of friendly faces yelled, "Surprise!"

The catalog fell from Dad's hand as he looked at the balloons and streamers. Then shaking his head and smiling, he turned to his children and said, "I can't believe I've been tricked!"

Betsy Ross is believed to have sewn the first American flag. Born on January 1, 1752, she learned to sew at an early age. In 1775, she started an upholstery business with her first husband, John Ross. Betsy's husband joined the Pennsylvania Militia at the start of the Revolutionary War. Sadly, he died while on duty. After her husband's death, Betsy Ross took over the business. According to legend, she received a visit from members of the Continental Congress in May of 1776. It is purported, or supposed, that George Washington, George Ross, and Robert Morris met with Betsy. Washington shared a design that members of the Continental Congress had come up with for a national flag. Allegedly, Betsy altered the design, lobbying for stars with 5 points. Washington had suggested stars with six points. In late May or early June of 1776, Betsy Ross finished sewing the flag. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the national flag. The flag had thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white stars in a circle to represent the thirteen colonies. Although thre is no actual historical evidence about Betsy Ross's role in sewing the first American flag, she remains an inspirational icon of the American Revolution.
