What is Effacement?

• Thinning of the Cervix

Purpose of early labor

• "Thin out the cervix" (efface) and prepare for birth

What is an Episiotomy

• An incision made if doctors are scared you’ll tear a certain way (cut is made to redirect tare)

• When the baby's head begins to come out

• How much your cervix has expanded

• Scissor like tools use to pull the baby out (wrapped around the head and then pulled out)

Braxton-Hicks contractions

• “warm up contractions” Your body's getting ready for real contractions

• Needle given in the back, (given only upon request) reduces all pain (you wont feel anything during birth)

• Medication given to make you dilate faster and quicken birth

• Strong and painful contractions stronger than regular contractions

What is Lamaze

• A baby's skin defect where the skin turns white and flakey

• A breathing exercise to help cope with birth

• A medication given upon request to help with labor pain

• A person who helps/coaches and a women and stays by her side while she's in labor

What is Induction?

• Medication given to make you dilate faster and quicken birth

• A breathing exercise that helps mothers deal with labor pains

Goal of Stage 3

• Push the placenta out & Afterbith

• Labor through to get the baby to your cervix (prepare for birth)

• Birth your baby

• Birth the placenta and afterbirth

• prepare for birth with contractions
