The Iroquois Nations of the northeastern United States were once five tribes -- the Mohawk, Onondaga, Oneida, ​ ​ (a)   -- who constantly fought one another.

Legend says that a man named Deganawidah decided he must bring peace to the tribes. He met a man named Hiawatha, and won him over to the Great Way of Peace. As Deganawidah's follower and ​ ​ (a)   worked to unite the tribes.

All of the chiefs agreed, except one. Tadodaho, the Onondaga chief, who ​​ (a)   treated his own people very harshly, was difficult to convince. Deganawidah and Hiawatha went to Tadodaho. Together they managed to convert him to peaceful ways.

Deganawidah gathered the chiefs together in Onondaga territory. The chiefs buried their weapons. On that ​ (a)   the Tree of great Peace, a symbol of the new bonds between the Iroquois nations. The great Law of Peace had become a reality. Because of this, Deganawidah is known as the Great Peacemaker.
