Events leading up to the Louisiana Purchase

• In 1791, Haitians won independence against the French

• As a result of Haitian independence, Jefferson gained Navigation Rights for the Missippi River in New Orleans

• Jefferson sent Monroe to French with 2 million dollars in order to secure the Navigation Rights from Napoleon

The Louisianna Purchase

• Haiti was lost, Napoleon had no use for the Louisianna territory so he told Monroe that he could have all of it

Why did Jefferson have an issue with the Lousianna Purchase
