What inspired you?

by a popular book called “The Microbe Hunters.” I also was inspired by my father’s love of science. When I was younger I loved reading about science and scientists. 

I did not have enough money for my education so I obtained funding from Queens College to help me in my full time study in chemistry. 

I was born April 16, 1921 in Queens, New York. I come from a family that believed strongly in the power of education. As a young child I loved reading about science and scientists. I graduated with honors in 1942. I landed work as a lab assistant at my old college. In 1944, I enrolled at Columbia University as a doctoral student. I was the first African American woman that received a Ph.D in chemistry in 1947.  In Yeshiva University in New York, I discovered the relationship between high cholesterol and clogged arteries.  I also taught biochemistry courses. In 1988, I started a scholarship in honor of my father for minority students that wanted to study science. With my research doctors saved the lives of people who were at risk of heart attacks. 

 I had to overcome was racism and gender bias as I pursued the field that I was interested in. I overcame these obstacles by believing in myself and focusing on what I wanted to do.
