This method consists of a transect line running across a reef system and any corals interacting directly with the survey line is being recorded.

It is among the method in quantifying benthic community, which measure the points of interest at specific interval either below the line or adjacent to the transect tape. This is the survey method currently adopted by Reef Check to assess percent cover of shallow coral communities.

This surveys uses images via high resolution digital cameras instead of manual counting and estimates provide a more accurate assessment of cover with data analysed in the laboratory rather than the field and can be archived for longevity (repeat) surveys.

This method provides a percentage estimate of living hard and soft coral, versus dead hard coral, which involves towing a snorkelling diver (observer) at a constant speed behind a boat.

This method provide a good measure of rugosity, but is time consuming and cumbersome
