Hotspot

• Is an ad hoc wireless access point that is created by a dedicated hardware device or a smartphone feature. It shares the phone's cellular data. Other nearby devices can then use the shared hotspot to connect to the internet
• The process of initiating contact between two Bluetooth devices and allowing them to communicate with each other.
• Wired Equivalent Privacy is a form of security and protection where a password key is used
• The act of using a cellular-network-connected mobile device as a mobile hotspot.

Ad hoc networks (peer to peer)

• A communications system now used for data communications via satellite that usually uses microwave radio frequencies and requires a dish antenna, receiver, and transmitter. Gives access to the internet when cables or mobile data is unavailable
• Second-generation mobile phone service, popular in the 1990s. 2G was the first standard to use digital transmission, and as such, it paved the way for texting and media downloads on mobile devices.
• Can be a temporary network with two or more computing devices. They do not require Wi-Fi access points or routers to work on that device. Could be used between two laptops to connect them together so they can share: Files, Internet access
• Less secure, No central device has control which can make them unmanageable, Uses data more quickly, Speed of data transfer

Advantages of Ad hoc networks

• Will need to rent/subscribe for use/storage (subscription)
• The act of using a cellular-network-connected mobile device as a mobile hotspot.
• Hard disk technology (magnetic / SSD) - storage.
• Easy to set up, No specialist hardware required such as routers, Can share data easily, Cheap to set-up

Disadvantages of Ad hoc networks

• Durability - robustness.
• Less secure, No central device has control which can make them unmanageable, Uses data more quickly, Speed of data transfer
• Patches and upgrades applied to each machine in house
• Wireless Protected Access is an upgraded form of encryption which is more secure than WEP

Ad hoc network performance issues

• Fibre connections often only provide fibre to the green cabinet in the street.
• Hard disk technology (magnetic / SSD) - storage.

• Poor signal can reduce access to the internet, Devices can disconnect if they use Bluetooth and are too far away, Many devices sharing a connection can make it very slow

Security issues with open Wi-Fi

• Less secure, No central device has control which can make them unmanageable, Uses data more quickly, Speed of data transfer
• Cloud providers will perform software updates for all users. This means that every user has the most up to date and secure version of the software. Cloud providers have millions of customers. They cannot have downtime whilst they perform updates. Engineers will often be experts and highly experienced
• Poor signal can reduce access to the internet, Devices can disconnect if they use Bluetooth and are too far away, Many devices sharing a connection can make it very slow
• You should only connect to Wi-Fi that uses WPA2 encryption. Alternatively, you could use a virtual private network (VPN) which encrypts everything between you and the VPN provider

Personal hotspot

• •Mobile phone - touch screen, fingerprint scanner, multiple cameras, vibration•Tablet - SSD storage, high resolution displays, long battery life, virtual keyboard, touch screen -Television - high quality (HD and 4K), streaming, on screen guides, control from mobile device •Digital assistant - voice controlled, in built speaker, network/Internet connected
• Allow you to connect devices to either a smartphone or small pocket device. Connections are made using either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth
• System to allow Internet access using mobile phone networks. Faster data transfer speeds than 3G. 12 - 15 Mbps.
• Cables (copper or fibre), Mobile (wireless), Satellite

Tethering

• Multiplayer games
• Installing and configuring dealt with by 3rd party company
• The act of using a cellular-network-connected mobile device as a mobile hotspot.
• Is the computer hardware and operating system that runs on it. A PC running Windows 10, A smartphone running Android or IoS, An Amazon Echo running Fire OS

Personal Area Networks

• System to allow Internet access using mobile phone networks. Faster data transfer speeds than 3G. 12 - 15 Mbps.
• Connect computers or devices together using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi For instance, a phone could connect to an in car entertainment system to play music and make hands free phone calls. These networks have a range of a few meters. Devices need to be paired for security
• RAM - memory - apps at the same time
• Bringing fibre optics from street to inside a house or building. Faster and more expensive than FTTC

Pairing
