Case 5: Book Theft from the Library

Witness: We have noticed many books going missing each week recently. We have looked back at the camera footage of people going in and out of the library. Question 6: Tree Cutting Conman

Witness (Height 1.7m): A man knocked on our door and said he could cut our trees at the side of our house. We needed them to be cut, so agreed to pay him R500 to do it. He made a start and then after about 20 minutes he said he needed R100 to put petrol in his chainsaw. We gave him the money and assumed he was going to the petrol station but we have not seen him since then. I spoke to a few other people in our neighbourhood who said the same thing had happened to them over the last few weeks. I hope you can catch him.

Detective: Could you describe him and his van?

Witness: His van was a Ford, white with no company name or anything. I didn't get the registration. He had a Liverpudlian accent and was shorter than me. He was wearing a beanie so I did not see his hair colour.

Detective: We spoke to your next door neighbour who saw him drive off and said he removed his hat. He had no hair.

Witness: He must have caught his finger on our rose bush because there was a trickle of blood on our side gate.

Detective: Yes, the police found the blood and it was blood group A.

Case 7: Dance Show Substitute

Witness (Height 1.84m): I am in a dance group and there are four of us. Last week one of our members was sick so we hired a woman to join us for one of our performances. At the end of the performance the venue pays us R1000 and on that night we left the money in our dressing room while we were getting changed. Then suddenly we noticed that the money was gone and so was the substitute dancer. We have not seen her since. I phoned the booking agency and they said that the person who was meant to join us had been told that she was not needed.

Detective: Could you describe the dancer?

Witness: We didn't get to know her too well because we spent the afternoon practising. She was foreign as she kept saying si instead of yes. She did not speak much and just copied the routine we were showing her. She was very tall, taller than me and I am tall. One thing I did notice was that there was an earring left in the changing room. It did not belong to any of us so must have been hers.

Detective: Yes, we handed that earring to the lab and they found a small trace of blood on it. I think that she scratched her finger putting it on. The blood is group B.

Case 8: Removal Van Robbery

Witness (Height 1.82m): Yesterday we were moving house and we hired a company to move all our furniture and belongings. The removal company parked their van in front of our house and had been putting thing in the van for about an hour when a man came to our door and started talking to me. He said he had been in England for 2 months and was born in Paris. He must have seen the keys for the removal van on the table because he quickly snatched them, got into the van and drove off. Some of the furniture fell out of the back and smashed. Some of the men from the removal company chased after the van but it was no use. The police said they found the van abandoned 20 kilometers away with most of the belongings gone. They think there may have been more than one person responsible and that this man who stole the keys was working in a team of burglars. I hope we can get our possessions back because some of them cost a lot of money or have sentimental value.

Detective: I hope so too, could you describe what he looked like?

Witness: I would say that he was the same height as me. He had blue eyes, a nasty scar on his cheek and a thick, black beard.
