A שופר may not be coated with gold (or anything):

• Where its's placed in the mouth

• On its entire mouth piece

• At the top section of the שופר where the sound comes out from

• On any part of the שופר

What is the reason for the שופר blasts lasting longer then the trumpets, in the הוה אמינא (initial way of learning) of the גמרא?

• To allow hearing of the שופר on it's own, in order for people to fulfil the מצוה

• So people should know, that the מצוה of the day is שופר

• To remind people, they must hear proper שופר blowing on this day

• Because the פסוקים about שופר blowing is said in מוסף

• We don't divide a blast in to two 

• One needs to hear an entire תקיעה blast from beginning to end to fulfil his obligation

• The blast was not long enough for two complete blasts

• We are afraid it will be counted like two blasts even when it is not long enough to be divided in to two blasts

According to the מסקנא (conclusion) of the גמרא, The reason why one long תקיעה blast is not divided in to two, is because:

• We don't divide a blast in to two 

• One needs to hear an entire תקיעה blast from beginning to end to fulfil his obligation

• The blast was not long enough for two complete blasts

• We are afraid it will be counted like two blasts even when it is not long enough to be divided in to two blasts

The reason why hearing שופר blown in a pit that had an echo, is no good, is because:

• Both sounds come from one person (source)

• The echo is usually much louder then the initial sound

• An echo is too similar to the sounds, making it much more difficult to distinguish between the two

• When the second sounds starts blowing, the first sound is still echoing, causing the sounds to interfere with each other.
