A city with political and economic control over the surrounding countryside

This is a state that contains two or more ethic groups with a history of self-determination that have agreed to coexist as one state, while remaining culturally distinct.

A nation that stretches across multiple states.

When an ethnicity has a history of self-determination but does not have a recognized state.

Regions that have a certain degree of autonomy from an external authority. These areas have no power over their own affairs and geographically distant from the country.

The region has some control over their own affairs, however, another state also controls the region.
