El 9 de mayo, los estudiantes de la Universidad de México votaron a favor de la huelga, para presionar al rector a sentarse a discutir las demandas exigidas.

Para el 23 de mayo y sin ningún acuerdo firmado, las manifestaciones se tornaron violentas cuando las fuerzas policiales intentaron dispersar violentamente a los estudiantes a fuerza de agua y garrotes.

La represión fue tal, que causó la indignación de la opinión pública, la cual terminó por apoyar la huelga estudiantil y esto, a su vez, ayudó a elevar la presión en las decisiones del entonces presidente interino Emilio Portes Gíl, quien finalmente el 29 de mayo concedió la autonomía universitaria a la ahora Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
