What was the middle passage?

• A path through which Africans had to go when they became slaves.

• A terrible journey Africans faced when they became slaves.

• THe name of a village in New England.

First, the slaves were....

• put in a nice and comfortable boat.

• in a house where they were given good clothes, food and water.

• Put in chains and marched hundreds of miles to the coast.

What happened to the slaves during the journey?

• Many made friends and enjoyed the " vacation".

• Many died along the way or suffered injuries and died after reching the coast.

• Many managed to scape by jumping overboard and swiming to the nearest coast.

How were the conditions of the slaves on board?

• Conditions were hard, but the slaves were allowed to do exercise and the beds were comfortable.

• Conditions were hard but there was lots of space between the ship's decks for the slaves to sit or stand.

• The trip was a nightmare, pairs of men were chained together at the ankle and wrist.

How were hygine conditions on the boat?

• The boats were perfectly clean.

• Slaves were allowed to clen the boats themselves so the hygene conditions were optimus.

• The conditions inside the ships were unbearable and the ships were crawling with lice, fleas and rats.

What did the slavers do with the slaves who refused to eat?

• They whipped slaves who refused to eat.

• They just let the slaves starve.

• They just gave the slaves more food.

When the slaves jumped overboard:

• They let them drawn as a punishment for their misbehaviour.

• They helped them to go back on board and then treated them with care.

• They went after them in rowboats and then whipped them once on board.

Some slaves tried to revolt by:

• Escaping at night when the crew were sleeping.

• Paying the crew for their freedom.

• Attacking the crew.
