A transmission mode characteristic. Bits of data are transferred one at a time over a wire. This is good over large distances. Its limited because complex data has to be broken into individual bits.

Parallel - A transmission mode characteristic. Bits of data are transferred simultaneously over a wire. A whole byte can be transferred at the same time. Faster because more bits transferred per second. Its limited to shorter distances (max about 5 metres)
