BTTF: Mise en Scene - Realism and Symbolism

Mise en scène means...

• that which has been put on screen (or stage), the total expressive content within the image - or, the overall look and feel of a movie. This is the first step in understanding how films produce and reflect meaning.

• the art of visual storytelling, how the story is captured by the camera and told to the audience. This includes everything that relates to the camera and how the captured visuals support the story being told.

• Setting, props, lighting, costumes, makeup and camera movements.
